Natural Gas (NG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) are clean, abundantly available alternative fuels. Using these fuels in vehicular and stationary internal combustion engines promises to reduce global dependency on foreign oil, lowers toxic emissions and improves operating costs. Furthermore, renewable fuel such as land-fill gas, provide even more resource sustainability.
Despite the enormous economic, energy security and environmental benefits of gas fuels, they are not direct substitutes for gasoline and diesel fuel. In fact, engine manufacturers and converters are facing well known challenges in achieving equivalent engine performance due to the lower energy density of these fuels. Current ignition systems, and particularly conventional spark plugs, simply cannot initiate consistent and robust combustion.
However, these challenges are not insurmountable and can be mitigated through the use of advanced ignition technology.
